However, if you were following the logic of how we got here so far, I don’t think it is realistic to say that the passing of this inflection point will suddenly upend civilization, and push everyone, everywhere back into the stone age in a matter of years. Instead, we are about to walk down a long winding road fraught with all sorts of perils, and have to prepare ourselves accordingly.
The Long Emergency ... is almost over.
We are currently looking at a situation where inflation is not abating despite a big increase in interest rates. Something is gonna bust... and when it does... the descent into hell will be very rapid indeed.
When the financial system snaps ... the lights will go off - permanently... and global supply chains will halt. That means no food. That means mass murder - rape - disease - starvation - cannibalism.

Thanks for all your brilliant writing. Our FB group is publishing pretty much all of it. Was wondering whether you are a man, I think so now. Wondering whether you are German, but your English is brilliant.
I understand you are looking at planetary consumption as a materials expert, and I'm very glad you are addressing engagement with materials at the individual level. So YES to these points in your piece: ("....skills and useful knowledge...when it comes to reusing, repairing and repurposing goods. Thus knowing how to repair an engine, or electronic devices, or how to mend clothes, ...Similarly, having... some first aid skills and...having the sacred knowledge of brewing beer...." )
I couldn't agree more for it's individuals who need to be empowered, for they will go on to become the legislators and voters and investors and engineers who will implement societal change.
What does empowering individuals look like?- We need to slow down the exclusive emphasis on STEM educations by teaching skills of the HHH (Head-Hand-Heart). Introduce curriculum for k-12 in Ecological Literacy. And build on that by offering, at the community level, life long learning in competencies with the material, non digital world such has mending, repair, cooking, reading a physical newspaper. Teach the 'hierarchy of needs' such as breath, water, food, shelter as ecological systems rather than zero sum acquisitions through capitalism. I drives me bonkers how modern society is besotted with frictionless transactions. its all to advance extraction and addictive consumption and to stay one step ahead of imploding technology. We need more small farmers and more local dood systems. With this framework we can transform 'consumers' to become empowered eaters who intuitively understand why, for example, the fad for Almond milk is a mis-use of scarce water in California and to appreciate food's nutritional purpose for both soul and soil. The list goes on and on. If we put all hands on deck to teach our current generations Ecological literacy, it would do much to reduce suffering and help society draw down needless consumption to adapt to new climate realities.
This a very poor effort.
I stopped here:

Thanks B. This is a good lead essay for my blog today. It sets the context within which to comprehend other bizarre events.
Whats your thougts on irreversible climate change?
Off-grid and feeling good about it. Diesel stores ok and would add that to the list as it would become very valuable if certain lines were crossed
Mass de-population in the short term would fix a lot of the problems for the medium term, I wonder how that will be accomplished?
